Scorpions
Scorpions are common pests in the Southern and Western United States. In Texas there are 18 species of scorpion in Texas but the most common is the Striped Bark Scorpion. Outdoors, scorpions can be found under stones, logs and rocks. They avoid extreme weather conditions and will look for more moderate environments as well as water indoors. Scorpions are nocturnal and emerge during the evenings to catch prey, which they paralyze with the venom found in the tail stingers.
Species of scorpions include:
Striped Bark Scorpion
This species of scorpion is pale in color with two dark stripes on its back. They blend in with their surroundings which helps them catch their prey stealthily. These scorpions are common in Texas and in the Southern United States.
Arizona Bark Scorpion
This variety of scorpion is larger than the Striped Bark Scorpion and are light brown in color. If they sting an animal or child, it can cause extreme pain and can potentially be deadly.
Texas Cave Scorpion
Also common in Texas, these scorpions typically live in rocky areas such as grottos and caves.
Giant Hairy Scorpion
As the name implies, this scorpion has brown hairs all over its body. These hairs are able to pick up vibrations in the soil. These pests feed on other scorpions and small animals but are rarely deadly to humans.
